What you need to create a wood splitter from a washing machine
The helical splitter has a metal cone, which splits logs during rotation. In addition, there is a frame (bed) - the whole structure is attached to it. There is also an engine and a drive mechanism that drives the cleaver.
How does the device for harvesting firewood
The electric motor starts, driving a small pulley. Thanks to the drive belt, the revolutions are transmitted to the large pulley, and from it to the shaft, where the cone for sawing and chopping wood is fixed. When you bring a log, the cone cuts into it and splits into pieces.
What tools will be needed for a splitter
To make a chipper you will need:
- welding machine with 3 mm electrodes;
- Bulgarian;
- drill;
- pliers;
- screwdriwer set;
- grinding wheel;
- file;
- anvil and vise;
- ruler;
- pencil.
When procuring materials, get a cone. It is very difficult to make a part yourself. A special thread is made on its surface for splitting firewood. It should not be deep and with a short step. Then the cone is heated in a furnace and cooled.
Buy a hardened cone in the online store. There you can also get a kit for a homemade machine: shaft, bearings, pulleys and belt.
If you have the opportunity, then all the details, except the cone, can be made independently.
Before manufacturing a device for cutting slabs, you need to prepare a detailed drawing with the calculation of all structural elements. The components of the splitter are listed in the diagram.
How to make a firewood chopping machine: drawings, instructions
The whole mechanism must rest on the frame or bed, which must be made. You will need:
- A metal corner measuring 4.5 m by 4 cm.
- Metal sheet with dimensions of 90 by 45 cm.
- Cardan suspension VAZ 2102, 03 - 07. Or you can find another suitable part.
Assembly of a bed:
- Using a grinder, you need to cut a corner into such parts: two 140 cm, four 20 cm, one 45 cm.
- Weld the structure in the shape of the letter “P” from two corners of 140 cm and one 45 cm.
- Step away from the top 90 cm and weld the universal joint. Between the cardan element and the joint (piece of 45 cm) lay a metal sheet and weld.
- From the remaining four parts of 20 cm, make legs. For convenience of movement establish wheels.
The bed platform is divided into two parts - work and power. The engine and the rest of the electronics are installed on the power side. The working part is a table made of metal sheet.
Assembly assembly
Install the shaft on the suspension and put the large pulley on one side. It is recommended to heat the shaft with a soldering iron during pressing in - for reliable installation of pulleys.
Then do this:
- Put a small pulley on the motor shaft. Position and secure the motor under the outboard. Since the structure will vibrate strongly, it must be firmly fixed.
- Small and large pulley combined belt.
- Put bearings on the other end of the shaft and fix them with screws on the metal tabletop.
Before installing the cone part, you need to connect and check the motor. It is advisable to choose an asynchronous engine, but you can also collector. The diagram below shows how to properly connect an old-style asynchronous electric motor:

If you need the motor to rotate in the opposite direction, then swap the wires as shown in the figure:
After connecting the motor to the network, you can see how well a makeshift wood splitter works. If everything is fine, you can install the cone and get to work.
Note! When feeding the logs to the cone, place it vertically, otherwise, with horizontal movement, parts of the wood may become stuck in the mechanism, which will lead to jamming.
